What happens if a cyclist causes an accident?
In Kentucky, if a cyclist causes an accident the cyclist may be responsible for damages of any injured parties. A cyclist rarely has insurance coverage on their bike (assuming it is not a motorcycle). That makes it difficult to sue the cyclist unless they have significant assets.
If you are involved in a crash with a cyclist it is important to get as much information as possible. Take a picture of their driver license and make sure you know who to contact to pursue the case. If the cyclist bikes off it will be nearly impossible to figure out who they are.
It is also possible to file an uninsured motorist claim if you are hit by a cyclist that leaves the scene of a Kentucky bike crash.
