Personal Injury Lawyers do press conferences because it is free advertising. There is also an argument to be made it makes the public aware of circumstances that can prevent future problems. In addition, we live in a society nowadays where people expect press releases and statements because we see them on the news. The question to me is really: Does a press conference benefit the clients case or am I just doing a press release to make myself feel important and get more clients. If it is the latter I have no business doing a press conference as a personal injury lawyer.

Free Is The Best Price
Personal injury lawyers are constantly trying to out-do and out advertise each other. This is the way they bring in cases and make a living. Plenty of very bad lawyers are very awesome advertisers. Therein lies the problem. There are some very good lawyers that don’t like to advertise. I’ve been a personal injury lawyer for over a decade. My take is that most of the time lawyers do press conference not to benefit the client or the case, but to benefit the lawyer. You don’t need a press conference to file a lawsuit and pursue a defendant for money. On the opposite side if I hold a press conference the whole world knows I’m working on a particular case. That can bring me in future clients which is why lawyers hold press conference. I wish there were more lawyers holding press conference concerning their accomplishments as opposed to I’m working on this particular case so I’m important.
Do Press Releases From Lawyers Benefit The Public Or The Lawyers?
If a press conference is putting the general public on notice of a danger I’m good with it. For example, if a lawyer files a class action lawsuit against a city for unsafe water it makes sense to share that information. Or if a particular defendant is repeatedly offending in a bad way lets have a press conference about that. We don’t need press conferences for generic car crash cases or slip and falls, but If the general public benefits than the press conference makes sense.
Do We Expect Press Conferences From Personal Injury Lawyers?
It is good for the media to have lawyers do press conferences. If I was a client I’d be concerned about how it would alter my case. Is the judge assigned to my case going to be happy about my lawyer piping off in the media and potentially tainting the jury pool. If there is a concern my lawyer should not be doing a press conference. It absolutely has to help the client or the case for a press conference to make sense in my opinion.
I wrote this entire post because last week I filed a relatively high profile lawsuit. My client has a large social media following and me tagging along on my clients relative fame would arguably be helpful to my business. However, it didn’t benefit the case for me to make a big deal about it. If it doesn’t benefit the case than it does not make sense for me to have a press conference or broadcast that I’m some big time lawyer working on a big time case. My job is to make a financial recovery for my client. Plain and simple.
I do like this template if a lawyer is going to do a press conference: https://www.michbar.org/News/NewsDetail/nid/5425/Why–How-to-Hold-Press-Conferences
