My name is Brian Dettman. I’m a personal injury lawyer in Louisville, Kentucky, and I work on a lot of unique, strange — some people might call them weird — cases.
A woman messaged me and said: “Hey, I have bats in my apartment and my landlord is not taking it seriously.” First thing I told her: do not touch the bats under any circumstance. I didn’t know this until I started doing this type of work, but bats can carry rabies. If you touch them, you have a massive problem.
I told her: go to your doctor and tell them there are bats in your apartment. That will require the doctor to report it to the health department, and then the health department can get involved with the landlord to get this fixed — before you get rabies. Because if you do get it, you’re basically going to die without treatment. You can receive anti-rabies treatment before it hits your system, but you need to act fast. This woman needed to get to her doctor so the doctor could report to the health department.
