When a Hospital Security Guard Crosses the Line

Louisville Injury LawyerWhen a Hospital Security Guard Crosses the Line

Most hospital security guards are professionals doing a hard job well. But “most” isn’t “all.” And when one crosses the line, the people they’re supposed to be protecting end up hurt.

I’m in litigation right now on exactly that kind of case. Here’s what happened.

The Facts

My client is a 65-year-old woman. Her husband is terribly sick, and she went to a hospital pharmacy in Jefferson County, Kentucky, to pick up his medication.

She parked in the parking garage and walked up to the door. She couldn’t get in.

A security guard saw her from across the parking area and walked over. They had a conversation — we have it on video. At some point during that conversation, my client tried to pull out her phone to record what was happening.

That’s when the security guard put his hands on her. He grabbed her wrist and bent it in a way wrists are not supposed to bend.

She wasn’t trying to break in. She wasn’t committing a crime. She was an elderly woman trying to get medicine for her husband, who is terribly sick.

The Question I Keep Asking

Why didn’t he just walk up and say, “Hey, looks like you’re trying to get in — how can I help?”

That’s the whole job. That’s what security at a hospital is supposed to be. You help confused or struggling people figure out what they need. Especially when “the person struggling” is a 65-year-old woman trying to pick up medicine for her husband’s terrible sickness.

Instead, he treated her like a criminal.

Where the Case Stands

We’ve got a trial date set for February. The other side is going to have a hard time with these facts. I have to imagine they know it.

The Bigger Point

I have to imagine the other side knows these are bad facts — a security guard putting his hands on my elderly client when she’s trying to get her husband medicine for his terrible sickness.
